Edwatch: Alliance for Education

Organization Name: Alliance for Education
Company Line: In 1995, through a merger of three education-related organizations with similar goals, The Alliance for Education was formed. The objective of this new organization was to serve as a catalyst for change, a convener of community leadership, and a conduit for directing private resources – both dollars and expertise – toward critical needs in Seattle Public Schools. Sixteen years later, the Alliance remains dedicated to supporting and improving public education in Seattle, operating independently of the school district.
Bottom Line: Alliance for Public Education identifies itself as a “critical friend” to the Seattle School district, striving to apply the right balance of support and pressure, always with the endgame of student success in mind. In other words the corporation uses its money and clout to promote education reform measures. Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation are among its many wealthy donors.
